The grandaddy champion of all ARPGs. The original, often cited as the greatest of all time (and it arguably still holds a bit of that title), the major influence, the game that laid the foundation for everything that came after, and arguably one of the most impactful game releases of all time on the PC. A major entry from the golden era of Blizzard, distilled down to an addictive circle that even 20+ years later remains astoundingly fun. You can see where every other APRG gets major influences from when you play this game. And, to be frank, it's pretty incredible just how much of the core mechanics from this game echo onwards from this game. The itemization is fun, the builds are fun to build, the farming routes are still fun, and I think this game is still totally playable and enjoyable today, even if it has some rough edges and has obvious age showing. I do love Diablo 2, but I am also okay with admitting that there are many other games that take the established recipe from this game and add in pizzazz that make them so much better. If you've ever wondered what made Chris Wilson get Grinding Gear Games going to eventually make Path of Exile, you just need to get lost in the strange fun that is running repeated Meph or Andy or Pindleskin or Baal runs. Even years later when I recently replayed the game, I got totally lost for a few hours just looping Countess -> Andariel -> Mephisto, and getting that old spike of dopamine when a rare dropped that I could use. I even got to experience the same heartbreak I did when I was younger when I picked up a unique ring and ID'd a Manald Heal. I guarantee that years down the road, we'll still see new ARPGs trying to capture the magic that Diablo 2 brings. There's something special about the spike in power from equipping a new item, or getting an excellent affix on an item that you've been looking for, or that moment when you start using the skill you've been waiting to use. My life would be different if I had never played this game, because in a funky butterfly effect, playing this game in 2000 lead to me eventually marrying my wife. It's funny how life works.

This is a masterpiece of a game that inspired a lot of other ARPGs such as PoE. It's definitely worth playing but you're limited by build variety and some QoL that might exist in a more modern ARPG.
