I'm a huge Dying Light glazer, yet I am still disappointed in this game. From my perspective at least, it's the worst in the series. The biggest thing by far is that this was originally supposed to be a DLC for DL2...and it absolutely should have stayed that way. I understand that just because we are playing as Crane again and that it's a "new" game in the series doesn't mean they have to make everything from scratch again, but the sheer amount of things that are pasted from DL2 is too much. It genuinely just feels like I'm playing DL2 but now I'm Crane, and there's no paraglider. They should have never made this into it's own game, and I find it so frustrating that the next game with our boy Crane after so many years ended up being this. There is too much to list here but if you've played DL2 for ~10 hours or pay attention to details like I do, you would see how much is the same. The story is better than the last two games combined, but some parts of the game in general are odd or frustrating. The way the virus works is not consistent. In the first game, if someone gets bit, as long as they have antizen they are fine. In the second game, as long as you weren't in the dark for too long, you would never turn, and you can keep track of the infection with a biomarker. Ok, they switched it up, it makes sense for DL2 because the chemical bombings mutated the virus. But now there's no methods of prevention at all, so anyone bit is just dead, because apparently the virus works how it did in the first game, despite the zombies looking the same as DL2. It's extra weird because at the start when the guy gets bit at the town hall, one of the people says, "It's ok we just need UV shrooms and some infusions," then another says, "No, it will only prolong the infection." Then he blows his head off because there's no chance of survival. So they knew about the DL2 methods of prevention, but they just don't work now and only prolong it? Aiden doesn't even have his biomarker on when he sneaks in to rescue Crane at the start, where did it go? Maybe I missed a detail, but if I did, it should not be that easy to miss. The beast mode looks and feels awesome, but from a gameplay view it is pathetically weak. It looks and sounds like this rip and tear everything, you are unstoppable mode, but it doesn't do either of those things. You gain pretty much no damage resistance (it might even be none, I can't tell), so you still have to focus just as much on not dying, and the damage is so underwhelming. At max beast level it can't even one shot a biter? Are you serious? In DL2 Aiden can literally rip humans and virals in half with one swipe in his volatile mode. For something that has to charge and can't be used often it is wayyy too weak. Also, it seems to be in this gray area where it's pretty much never talked about. It's never shown in a cutscene and only spoken of like two times across all missions and is just referred to as "outbursts." Very weird. I lost count of how many times I got stuck on some geometry in this game. Nothing pisses me off more in a game than getting stuck on seemingly nothing while dangerous enemies are all around and I have to move constantly. I just played through again for the one-life mode rewards and I know for a fact I did not get stuck that much on my first playthrough. It's like if you get too close to anything or approach it at an angle that isn't a perfect 90 you just can't move at certain angles once you touch it. Some spots are worse than others. Volatiles are no longer a pushover like in the last two games. While I am not level 300 in this game so I don't know how easy it is to kill them at max level, normally, even in beast mode, you are losing a 1v1 to a volatile every time. Being caught in the dark is actually a threat now, especially in permadeath mode. There are mixed views on this, some are upset that they function differently and some like that they are a threat now, like they're always shown to be. This is how it was at launch at least, I have not tried to kill them recently. I think it's odd to make them like this 3 games in, but whatever. The loot they have should be worth it at least. Speaking of, the only way to reach level 300, at least right now, is to play through the story like 10 times on NG+. There is literally no other way, and you also have to do almost every side mission every time too, since the health of the zombies increases with every NG+ (this was not the case in the last game), you need as much xp as possible to stay caught up with damage. This was pretty much the case in the last game too, but they had challenges and GRE anomalies you could do for xp too. This is why nobody does it legit and just uses mods. Obviously getting max level shouldn't be possible in like 2 hours, but it also shouldn't take this long. Finally, the last supper mission. We don't know if Aiden still has those volatile blackouts, but Crane is still fully capable while at this table. You're telling me that neither of them got angry enough to go beast and break those flimsy ass metal shackles on these tiny wooden chairs? While watching Spike and others die right in front of them? Maybe it doesn't work like the hulk, but we were given that impression early on. In the power plant mission Crane was able to enter beast mode just by being pushed around by soldiers, and he enters it every time he does a finisher on a larger enemy, but now he's watching his best friend die and he can't channel enough to break out? And this is after he injected himself with like 8 Chimeras. I like how they did it at the same time, the Baron was beyond brutal and unforgiving, but it just doesn't make sense. However, it is far from a "cash grab." It is clear that there was a lot of effort put in, every building has loot spawns and unique interiors as usual, there are easter eggs, hidden weapons, and treasure hunts around the map just like the last two games. Some crazy new weapons like the sawblade launcher and the grenade launchers, the game looks amazing and runs well. The devs are adding free content probably for years to come, just like the last two games. They definitely should have kept it a DLC though, and I don't think it's worth the full $60, it should be 40 for how much is taken from DL2. There is simply not enough uniqueness.
