Command Boris Todbringer, Elector Count of Middenland in Total War: WARHAMMER III. Beloved by the wolf-god Ulric, Boris seeks to defend the Empire from destruction, and slay his nemesis, the Beastlord Khazrak One-Eye.
Campaign Feature - The Great Temple of Ulric
By defeating the enemies of the Empire, Boris raises the Fervour of his faction. This enables him to develop the Great Temple of Ulric, enhance its six sacred Sanctuaries, and perform great Winter Rites to energise his armies.
Sanctuaries provide numerous permanent bonuses to Boris Todbringer’s faction, and as they are upgraded, the Flame of Ulric grows ever-brighter, earning him the right to recruit powerful Elector State Troopers to bolster his armed forces.
Battle Playstyle
Wielding his signature weapon Legbiter in battle, Boris Todbringer is a fearsome melee combatant. He is also a legendary veteran General, granting numerous command-related bonuses to Middenland’s soldiery who fight by his side.
He can recruit troops from across the Empire roster and has access to the following new Middenland and Empire-themed units.

boris is a nice campaign, a well needed new empire experience, his units are lore friendly and great in his hands, most of the ulrican units are a bit useless in other empire campaigns, but i think thats fine and adds more uniqueness to each empire campaign (i think units should be restricted to specific factions anyway lol), will play him only with reskins though because f*** that castle on his helmet it looks just as stupid as it does in his model
I'd give this one a mixed review if possible. Not that Steam will ever allow it. Because Tod isn't bad. He's fairly powerful as a character. His 'gain x movement after a battle' is straight up OP (dont nerf) but that's really it. His mechanic is clearly the least worked on of the 4 DLC, and it shows. It's nice to have another place to start in the Empire, away from the Vampires. The whole Beastmen mechanic is just a whack-a-mole game. Besides that, it's empire as usual. So if you like the Empire, sure, grab him. He's, okay. But I wouldn't say his faction brings "fun" in any unique way.
For Ulric !
Worst DLC ever.
Give me his fangs, give me his claws
An old friend returns home... but at what cost? Boris could've easily been included as a free update. You can really tell he got the least love from the developers in Lords of the End Times.
Gameplay
Boris Todbringer, an absolute veteran of Total War: Warhammer, is finally playable. As the leader of Middenland, he sets out from Middenheim to fight the forces of Chaos and the undead in the far north of the Empire, but... his campaign goals are pretty underwhelming. Destroy Festus, the Barrow Legion, and Sylvania? Perform a few rites tied to a completely boring mechanic? Build some Landmarks? Great. I'm falling asleep already. It sounds like the Reikland all over again. Whatever happened to his rivalry with Khazrak? Couldn't they have leaned more into his connection to the Beastmen and given him some campaign objectives around that? Overall, pretty disappointing.
Mechanics
What I also found really disappointing are Boris' mechanics. Throughout the campaign, he collects Fervour, which can be used to unlock special buffs in the Great Temple of Ulric, instantly recruit units of Ulric, or temporarily buff his army. Yeah... it felt like a cheap knockoff of the Dwarf Grudge mechanic. And there's really not much more to say about his mechanics, because... that's basically it. The Middenland tech tree is also exactly the same as the Reikland's, with literally one single section being changed to buff Ulric units. Absolutely brilliant.
New units
The new units for the Empire feel... well, kinda mediocre. Design-wise, they actually look pretty cool, but a lot of them didn't really impress me in battle. I'm not much of an Empire player myself, but I feel like Teutogen Guard should be able to beat Tier 2 units. There are already so many alternatives that it's really easy to replace them entirely. The Knights of the White Wolf look great too, but they completely failed me in my battles. At that point, I might as well use a safer and more reliable unit, especially since the Empire already has five different cavalry options. I actually really liked Emil Valgeir, though. That guy absolutely went off in my battles, threw out some seriously powerful prayers, and they looked pretty damn cool too.
Boris Todbringer
Yeah... the skill tree isn't anything special either. A bit of upkeep reduction, some extra control for your provinces, and once again, Unbreakable as the final skill. Just like every other Lord of the End Times has... Zzz. And again, there are no bonuses for fighting Beastmen or anything like that? The guy literally exists to kill Beastmen. His unique items are at least pretty solid. The Middenland Runefang gives him some nice melee damage buffs and, which is pretty cool, makes his attacks magical. The Talisman of Ulric makes him tankier and also lets him regenerate HP every second.
Final words
So, out of all the DLCs I've played, this one has done the least for me when it comes to the content, mechanics, and new units. Not even remotely. I've also seen a lot of people mention issues with the Final Battle, which is apparently very similar to Elspeth's. Great... Zzz. For €9, I really don't think it's worth it. And I can't even make the argument that you should get the DLC for the new units, because yeah... they're not really worth it either.
If you enjoyed the review, check out our curator page!
