I understand the mixed reviews. It's not the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III is bad, but it's not good either and not to the standard of the previous games. This is a spoiler review of the Campaign only. The Good: - The characters are still great. Farah Karim is still excellent, as are Price, Soap, Gaz, and Ghost. Gaz doesn't have as much to do this time around, but it's really Price's story. - The game still looks great. - Levels have good visual variety and one mission in particular has strong vertical sections. - AC130 Mission is still excellent like before. - Graves survived MWII and Alex survived MWI. I liked Alex's sacrifice in that first game so not sure how I felt about that. Graves is a great character and explores that grey morality so I was happy to see him return and his role in the story. - Makarov is still an excellent villain in the remake. His breakout in mission 1 was awesome! The Mixed: - Open Missions are underbaked. The first one with Farah placing trackers can be completed in minutes. In one sense it feels like Sniper Elite, but Sniper Elite does open-world stealth / objectives so much better that all I can feel is how rushed it all feels. It feels like I'm playing a 30-minute PvE Warzone session instead of a campaign advancing the story. The bomb defusal one with Ghost is probably the best of the lot, but you can fly through these missions. - Some story choices feel rushed and levels feel far too short. The Laswell CIA undercover mission can literally be completed in a few minutes. I retried it several times trying to get the 90 second achievement and still beat the campaign in under 5 hours... speaking of... The Bad: - 4 to 5 Hour Campaign. That's the real problem. Makarov isn't able to be developed enough. We see in a flashback that Soap and Price encountered and captured him four years ago, now he's free and wants to frame Farah as a terrorist. On paper, it's really interesting, but in execution, I don't feel like he's a threat until the end of the campaign. TF141 is able to stop most of his terrorist plans. The "No Russian" airplane scene is interesting, but doesn't feel nearly as impactful as the airport and framing the American undercover operative from the original MWII story. Instead they want to frame one of Farah's former soldiers, but you quickly scrub the crash site and there aren't many lasting impacts. I was just disappointed that Makarov wasn't more effective in this campaign. - What we really needed was another character to see the story from the perspective of a normal soldier again in between TF141 missions. That would've helped build the campaign to full length. - Armour in the campaign is ridiculous. I know this is carried over from Warzone to the main Campaign, and I know that Juggernauts have been around for awhile but the armour lifebars make me feel like I'm playing Halo more than CoD. - Man, I miss Clean House... where is the nightvision sweep and clear mission this time around? Where is the Recon by Fire / All Ghillied Up sniper mission?
