All the world's a stage, yet homeward lies the heart.
This story is purely fictional. Any resemblance to reality—
may not be coincidence, but rather a reflection of choices we’ve all faced at similar crossroads in our lives.
Protagonist is an interactive game about anti-conditioning, portraying a theatrical journey of pretense and self-redemption. The script is written by the system, but the ending is determined by your own principles.
Campus performance mixed with light suspense forms the core of this story. It focuses on real-world growth, breaking away from conventional romance-driven storytelling.
It is, above all, a documentary poem dedicated to every young person struggling between ideals and reality.
The game revolves entirely around performance. It is about acting—but not only about acting.
It is also about pretense, but ultimately about—how to preserve a sliver of authenticity in a life where pretense is unavoidable.

Welcome to the Master Class of Jinglin Academy of Performing Arts.
Known as the "Whampoa Military Academy of Stardom," it is the stairway to glory countless dreamers long to ascend. But remember—the spotlight never illuminates the truth; it only casts shadows.
In this game, you will step into the role of "Lusheng," the one who enters the game. The moment you cross the school gate, you are no longer a spectator. You become part of the stage. Everyone here is playing a role—including you yourself. Their smiles are part of the script. Their tears are rehearsed. Their embraces may be setup for the next act.
Always remember:
Every word they speak is dialogue. Every tear they shed is a prop. Every look they give you is waiting for your response.
The system is watching you. It does not speak, but it records. It records whether you applaud at the right moment, whether you cry on cue, whether you reveal your true self during "improvisation."
The rules are conditioning you. There are penalties for lateness and penalties for early departure. But the most severe punishment is this—you forget you are acting.
If you start believing they love you, if you start feeling you belong here, if you look in the mirror late at night and no longer recognize your own expression…
Then you have already fallen into the trap. Beneath the trap is not a stage, nor an escape route—it is the abyss. You must stay vigilant amidst the lies. Hear the truth between the lines of dialogue. Find, within the margins of the script, the self that has yet to be assigned a role.
Welcome, freshman.
Please take your script.

Cheng Jin (The Guiding Senior): Your undercover partner. Can you pass her tests and earn her trust?
Lin Ranran (The Pure Camellia): A microcosm of struggle within the system. Will you become her light—or push her deeper into darkness?
Zhou Ruonan (The Barbed Rose): Your classmate. Is her bullying pure malice—or does it serve another purpose?
Yan Zhi (The Caged Gardener): Your mentor. Is she the ladder that helps you reach the top—or the nail that pins you to the rules?
Gu Ying (The Fading Ember of Idealism): Your director. Will you be her redemption in despair—or become part of the reality that crushes her?
Tang Zhi (The Lost Star): A former child star who once shone bright. Her insecurity is an opening—her lingering innocence may become the sharpest test of your conscience.

NICE STORY, 10/10
I was expecting and looking for something like Breakout 13, Road to Empress and The Vig, more drama-oriented with just some light dating sim elements but sadly I didn't find it here. The main plot and setting is interesting, which makes it more frustrating when entire acts devolve in heartfarming the waifus with some barely justifiable plot reasons while the pacing goes to hell. Too much of a harem fantasy, too little tension. Good for and dating sim fans and sophisticated gooners but it ain't for me, boss.

All the world's a stage, and all the men and women are merely players. Today my role is reviewer, for a game where the leading male actor plays the role of an undercover agent, who then assumes the role of a young actor, so he can infiltrate a drama college and expose nefarious individuals. What role will you play? Protagonist is a well put together third-person FMV game that mixes romance with drama, focusing on the performance arts. It remains interesting, has great characters, and exploits its themes to provide a unique narrative style. Lu Sheng’s sister got seriously injured not long after she graduated from an exclusive Master Class at Jinglin Academy. Believing there was foul play, Lu Sheng plans to infiltrate the class by pretending to be a newbie actor. He is assisted directly by a covert female partner, who joins the school but not the class. As Lu Sheng, you get close with three young actresses, each with their own problems and aspirations. You also meet a goal-orientated teacher, an idealistic director, and a femme fatale producer. The narrative remains interesting and is paced well. The progression from a newbie into this secretive class feels earned. It also leverages the theme to provide subtle meta references to the movie industry, which grants it natural depth. Early on, the game plays around with reality nicely; Lu Sheng acts beside classmates, but is it all an act? Life imitates art, after all. It is a pity these layered abstract moments did not persist longer. Characters are consistently strong, with deep personalities that rest closer to a quality drama than a simple romance game. There are seven love interests, but their screen time is not equally balanced. The director, Gu Ying, is wasted as she is mostly isolated to one chapter. Even the producer, Xia Meng, comes late but gives a captivating performance that deserved far more lines. So the romantic depth gravitates to the fellow student actresses—Zhou Ruonan, Lin Ranran, and Tang Zhi--and your concealed partner, Cheng Jin, since they appear early and stay involved. These heftier romances have good and bad endings, which are usually satisfying despite their brevity. Unfortunately, the endings for the teacher, Yan Zhi, are flat. Occasionally, the game uses first-person angles, more commonly in the finales, and it leverages this intimate perspective almost as well as The VIG. Video quality and directing is high standard, with most audio taken from live on-set. Although the plot is a bit too linear, it still takes about 8-9 hours to see everything due to side paths and endings locked behind affection levels. Protagonist is one of the better releases this year, mostly because of its theme, acting, and general narrative polish. Players that prefer direct romances might find that some characters needed more time on stage, but they have their exits and their entrances, and one man in his time plays many parts. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3765181181
