ough.... who up holding they bone rn.........
Bonehold is a pretty nice game for its price, but it suffers from wanting to be too much. It could be a linear, simple dungeon crawler without 'rougelike' nonsense, but instead, it stretches out too much, and gets boring too quick. SPOILERS AHEAD! The first few runs in Bonehold are fun, but it goes off the rails very quick. The biggest problem in my opinion are the items, and the level up stats. Basically, you just look to get all your slots filled with unique items, because alot of magic/rare items are very uninteresting, not really impactful, or straight up hostile to the player, which is kind of an absurd game design. Mods like damaging knives launching out when you dash, that consume mana every time. A cool concept in a vacuum, but you dont always dash offensively, sometimes you just want to move quicker.. so yeah. A mod that redirects damage from your health, to your mana pool. If you get just a small chip damage, your mana just evaporates instantly, but without the mod you could barely notice you took any damage. And the worst offender are lingering damage pools that you can create by dashing/walking, etc. They can literally damage the Shopkeepers, so if you forget you have that on any item, tough luck, deal with it. Uniques on the other hand, are so overpowered you could just run almost naked with just a few and win easily. For example, Levitating boots? Sure! You can just cheese half of the game without thinking much. Sure, you have a spell that lets you levitate aswell, but the boots work constantly, and are just straight up breaking the game. I dont really think they should exist in a state they are in. When it comes to enemy, or level design, its a very standard formula, which works. There isnt much to say here. besides bugs, and some bad decisions. The worst offender here is shotgunning projectiles mobs fire, if you are too close. Finnishing the 10th Floor, with a grand finale boss at the end, left me with a bad taste in my mouth. The boss is extremely easy, boring, and spawns ALOT of enemies between phases. Enemies we fought tens of times earlier. After returning, the NPCs dont even register you've beaten the game. It feels straight up rushed and unfinnished.

such a good dungeon crawler roguelite. dont let the graphics turn you off.
Not great, but still good and tickles the right spot. There's a lot in this game that only half-works. Food is a timer you either have too much or too little of. Most upgrades you gain from a level-up are extremely irrelevant. You earn a lot of gold, but shops rarely have relevant items for you to buy. There's exactly one specific platforming section that spawns multiple times on every run. A lot of time is wasted in the game just smashing barrels, which can be a bit frustrating if you don't bring an aoe weapon. Enemies are kind of same-y... ...but none of which kill the game and at the end of the day, it's still a fun little low-budget dungeon crawler with nice 2d sprites. And sometimes you are in that state, where your brain is too mushy to do high-octane action or excessive puzzle solving and you wanna nice little dungeon crawler that takes it slow, but still provides some challange. So, yeah, I recommend it. It's not the smash-hit you need to play right now, but it certainly is a good thing to have in your library. Like right now I have a cold, can't do something proper and this is exactly the entertainment I need in that state.
