Disney/Pixar Toy Story: Retro Roundup! is a charming journey through an earlier generation of movie-inspired video games, combining familiar characters, nostalgic gameplay, and thoughtful modern improvements into one entertaining collection. Developed by Digital Eclipse and published by Atari and Digital Eclipse, this compilation celebrates the classic adventures of Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and other beloved Pixar characters. Rather than replacing their original identities with modern interpretations, it preserves their distinctive mechanics and presentations while introducing features that make them more accessible. The result is an appealing retro experience that balances historical preservation with contemporary convenience, although its older gameplay systems occasionally reveal their limitations. The collection brings together classic Toy Story adventures alongside A Bug's Life, offering 11 console and handheld versions across its included titles. This variety provides a fascinating look at how similar characters and stories were adapted for different gaming hardware. Traditional side-scrolling platformers sit alongside three-dimensional exploration, action-focused challenges, and arcade racing. Each experience has its own personality, preventing the package from feeling like a repetitive assortment of nearly identical games. However, some versions share substantial content, meaning the advertised number of playable versions does not necessarily translate into an equivalent number of completely different adventures. The original Toy Story remains an enjoyable example of classic platforming, with colorful environments, recognizable locations, and challenging obstacle courses. Its levels capture the imaginative perspective of toys navigating an oversized human world. Meanwhile, Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear to the Rescue! expands that concept through three-dimensional exploration, collectible objectives, and larger environments. These adventures retain considerable charm, but their controls and camera behavior can feel outdated. Precision-based challenges sometimes become frustrating because of awkward movement or unforgiving level design. Players accustomed to modern platformers may require patience, particularly when navigating demanding sections that offer limited room for mistakes. Buzz Lightyear of Star Command introduces a more action-oriented experience, while Toy Story Racer provides a refreshing change of pace through competitive arcade racing. The latter is especially appealing for players seeking casual multiplayer entertainment, offering colorful competition without requiring extensive preparation. A Bug's Life adds another distinctive adventure, using its miniature insect perspective to transform ordinary natural surroundings into imaginative environments. Although these games offer different gameplay styles, their overall quality is inconsistent. Some mechanics remain surprisingly entertaining, while others suffer from repetitive objectives, limited responsiveness, and design choices that have become less enjoyable over time. The most significant improvement is the Rewind feature, which allows players to reverse mistakes without restarting entire sections. This dramatically reduces the frustration associated with difficult jumps, unexpected damage, and demanding encounters. Rex's Cheat Codes further improve accessibility by providing options such as unlimited lives, invincibility, and unlocked content. Enhanced gameplay instructions and Practice Mode help newcomers understand unfamiliar mechanics before tackling more challenging situations. These additions are particularly valuable because they allow players to experience the original games at their preferred difficulty level. Traditionalists can preserve the intended challenge, while casual audiences can enjoy the adventures without unnecessary punishment. Another outstanding aspect is the extensive historical content. The virtual museum includes archival photographs, development documents, and interviews exploring the creation of these classic adaptations. Contributions from individuals associated with Pixar, Disney gaming, and the original development teams provide valuable insight into the creative decisions behind these projects. This material gives the compilation an educational dimension rarely found in ordinary retro rereleases. The dedicated Music Player is equally welcome, allowing players to appreciate the soundtracks independently from gameplay. Together, these extras demonstrate that the collection is intended to preserve gaming history rather than simply capitalize on familiar characters. Visually, the compilation embraces authenticity instead of attempting a complete graphical overhaul. Its colorful sprites, recognizable character designs, and early three-dimensional environments retain their original charm, although aging textures, simple animations, and dated presentation remain noticeable. The soundtracks contribute strongly to the nostalgic atmosphere, while the familiar settings help maintain the connection to Pixar's animated worlds. Steam Achievements, Steam Cloud, controller support, shared-screen multiplayer, and Remote Play Together add welcome modern functionality. Nevertheless, the experience remains fundamentally retro, and players expecting contemporary production values or extensively redesigned gameplay may be disappointed. Steam Deck compatibility is officially rated Verified, making the collection a suitable choice for Valve's handheld system. This designation confirms that the game meets Steam's compatibility requirements, including appropriate controller functionality and handheld usability. Its combination of relatively short gameplay sessions, accessible controls, and convenient Rewind functionality makes portable play particularly attractive. The ability to revisit classic adventures without being restricted to a desktop setup further strengthens the collection's appeal. Despite its strengths, the compilation is not without weaknesses. Several included games demonstrate noticeable mechanical aging, and the differences between platform versions may appeal more to dedicated retro enthusiasts than casual players. The reliance on nostalgia also means that newcomers without an emotional connection to these characters or games may find the underlying experiences less compelling. Nevertheless, the generous accessibility options, historical documentation, and varied gameplay styles help justify the package as more than a straightforward rerelease. Overall, Disney/Pixar Toy Story: Retro Roundup! is a worthwhile celebration of classic licensed gaming that successfully combines nostalgic entertainment with meaningful preservation features. Its greatest achievements lie in making older adventures more approachable while maintaining their original personalities. Although inconsistent gameplay quality and dated mechanics prevent it from reaching exceptional heights, the historical extras and thoughtful improvements make it an attractive collection for Pixar enthusiasts and retro gaming fans alike. I think the emulation was quite poor as it froze many times, but i think this collection gives you a lot of bang for your buck, the GBC version of star command was pretty fun too and the PS1 TS2 is worth 20 bucks on it's own imo.
I bought this collection solely for Toy Story 2. It's exactly what I expected and exactly how I remembered. Museum/gallery features for Toy Story 2 are a little bare, but that's a minor complaint when the real reason I bought this is to get mad when I fall off the plane in Tarmac Trouble for the 5th time.
