Even at full release the game is unfinished. Of the three endings I reached, two were clearly the equivalent of easter eggs, and the felt like some sort of set-up for a future game. I feel unresolved narratively and there has been no sense of climax or conclusion. The core combat mechanics are solid. The setting is evocative enough to draw attention. Even the conceit is intriguing enough to pursue. Polish those, then hire a proper team of storytellers to actually tie it all together into something cohesive.
I have not yet finished the game, but I'm currently having so much fun with it, and seeing some of the other reviews just made me want to post it, because I think it's a great game. Yes, it has some QoL issues, but nothing really major, and I think the rest of the game is just worth it. Pros: ♦ The story: Yes, it's very simple and straightforward, and so far does not have any kind of big twists, but they know it, and made it very simple on purpose and it shows, as every character just has a bit of dialogue and almost no real interaction That said, I do think there were some funny moments there, and as a game that's more focused on gameplay, I can just appreciate it as it is. ♦ The world: I do think the world was very beautiful, with lots of different settings, and with lots of exploration. I also appreciate how lived in it feels, as you can sometimes find some random NPC's here and there just doing their thing. I did find myself lost every so often, but I do enjoy that feeling of having to discover where to go. ♦ The combat: Probably the best part of the game. I consider myself to be fairly good at these kinds of games, but it still took me a while to get the hang of the combat, but after I did, the game got real fun. It is fast-paced, challenging but not overwhelming, and very fluid. The bosses are also very fun, and they were able to make every one of them so far have different mechanics, and they were all very enjoyable so far. There were also not really long runbacks for most of them, which was nice. CONS ♦ Currency: Honestly, this was one of the things that bothered me, as so far there's not yet somewhere that gives that much currency, and I do know that eventually I will have to find a farming spot for it if I want to complete everything that requires it + it does bother me a lot that we lose our currency on death, even more so when there are situations that saving large amounts of it is needed (for the merchant bond for example), and it also bothers me that we have to pay for the teleport, even more so because it is a game that made me feel lost and wondering where should I go, which is usually fun for me, but being punished for having to try lots of different spots in short intervals is not really good. imo, the merchant passive bonus should be +% drop rate for shards instead of a discount on tp. ♦Skill tree: Honestly, I feel more neutral about this one, but I feel like tying yout skill tree with completionist stuff (finding hidden items, killing X amount of monsters in each area, etc) is Ok. For me, I do like exploring a lot and looking for hidden stuff, but I feel that for some people that just want to progress through the game, it can be kind of a downside for them, so I put it here. For me, it just felt like they took the best parts of Hollow knight, Silksong and Ori the will of the wisps (which are some of my favorite games of the genre) and made their own thing, and for me, it just worked really well!
This is a mediocre MV with some questionable design choices. I wonder what heck the devs were thinking with some of elements... The world is gorgeous but level design blows chunk. Not enough checkpoints, traversal is tedious and not enough shortcuts to ease your backtracking. Visual clarity is awful in some spots and lack of clear directions does not help, either. There's some puzzles that require colors, this is a big NO because some people have color blindness. It seems like the scope of each biome is just too massive and mostly empty. Too many tanky flying enemies that take several hits and not enough options to effectively deal with tthem. Oh and they do too much damage. Player progression does not feel satisfying and rewarding, youo gain points from finding NPCs all over the woorld and use them to obtain abilities. I suppose this approach leads to more open-ended exploration which is fine in thheory if the game is good. The issue is that some biomes are too difficult and not properly tuned for open-ended exploration.
They added so much backtracking in the first two areas that you can't Experience the game before you're already past the two hour point and by that point you realize it's too late. This game is boring as **** and the movement is so incredibly slow. The combat seems pointless and feels bad. The random currency doesn't make any sense and you lose it on top of that when you die and so you it's unclear what it's for but it still feels bad to die and lose it and also even the first most inconsequential upgrade costs 3000 of another currency that they use but you only get about 30 at a time of that currency and even after three hours I don't have enough to buy the first upgrade. And the upgrade is literally plus 1% damage It's completely meaningless and it seems like every other thing on that tier is about the same usefulness.
Sorry, i cannot recommend this game to anyone. Especially metroidvania fans. Theres too much games simply better than Fallen tear! FT:TA is beutiful, no doubt about it - bright, colorful, gorgeus. This is the sole reason i am still playing it. Combat is ok, it functional. But the pacing of the world is simply terrible! First of all, in this game you have 4 types of currency. And it doesnt feel like we really need that much. How is it connected to world pacing? Well, you doent find you metroidvania-classic skills exploring the world. You buy skills with special currency. Magic currency, the most valuable currency. Friends! Right, you are grinding friends in this game. How exactly? Doesnt even ask. So, you grinded some friendship points, and you go to the shop. You buy skills like double jump, dash - classic stuff. And then... where should you go?? The map is huge - unnesesarry huge - full of secrets, little upgrades and deadends. And finding the way you really suppose to go is a nightmare! Deadend after deadend, closed path after closedf path. No hints, no clear indication of where you need to go. So, you wander aimlessly, examine every little path, find nothing, frustrate. I played more than 20hrs now, and i found only ONE of 4 god-bosses. Which is a FIRST quest you take!!! The game gave me more frustration than positive emotions. Cannot believe it, but EVEN SILKSONG felt better than Fallen Tear! On the paper? on screenshots Fallen Tear is great. But execution is simply bad.
