Fireboy & Watergirl 4: The Crystal Temple delivers another focused entry in the long-running puzzle-platforming series, preserving the accessible two-character concept while placing greater emphasis on coordination, timing, and efficient puzzle solving. Developed and published by Oslo Albet, the game keeps its ambitions deliberately straightforward: guide the elemental pair through a succession of hazards and puzzles, collect diamonds, reach their respective exits, and complete stages as efficiently as possible. It is an old-school design philosophy that works because the mechanics are immediately understandable while still leaving room for increasingly demanding challenges. At the heart of the experience is the relationship between Fireboy and Watergirl. Each character must navigate environments according to their elemental properties, making it necessary to think about the safety and positioning of both heroes rather than treating them as interchangeable avatars. A route suitable for one character may be dangerous for the other, while switches and environmental mechanisms frequently require cooperation. This creates puzzles in which the challenge is not simply determining where to go, but understanding the correct sequence of movements required to get both characters safely through the level. The Crystal Temple setting gives this fourth adventure its own identity while retaining the recognizable structure of the series. Levels are designed as compact obstacle courses where observation is just as valuable as quick reactions. Players must examine the layout, identify interactive mechanisms, understand the safest routes, and then execute their solution without making unnecessary mistakes. The pressure of beating the clock adds another dimension because knowing the solution does not automatically mean completing it efficiently. Once a level has been solved, returning to it and attempting a faster, cleaner run can be surprisingly satisfying. Diamond collection further encourages careful exploration and replayability. Simply reaching the exits represents only the most basic form of success, while collecting everything and achieving better completion times gives more dedicated players additional objectives. This makes the game suitable for two different approaches. Casual players can concentrate on solving each room at their own pace, whereas completion-oriented players can pursue more efficient routes and cleaner execution. It is a simple progression philosophy, but one that complements a puzzle-platformer particularly well. Playing alone turns the experience into a multitasking exercise. Controlling both characters means constantly switching attention between them, remembering their positions, and determining which action needs to happen first. Certain situations become miniature sequencing problems in which moving one character too early can disrupt the entire solution. This makes solo play more thoughtful than the colorful presentation might initially suggest, especially when several mechanisms need to be managed in the correct order. Cooperative play is arguably where the concept becomes most entertaining. Two players can share the same device, with each person taking responsibility for one character. This changes the nature of the puzzles because communication becomes part of the challenge. Players must coordinate movement, decide who activates mechanisms, and avoid accidentally leaving their partner trapped or exposed to a hazard. Shared and split-screen cooperative functionality supports this style of play, while Remote Play Together allows the local cooperative format to be extended online. The result is a particularly approachable game for friends who enjoy solving problems together without having to learn complicated controls or progression systems. The presentation deliberately maintains the recognizable retro simplicity of the franchise. Rather than overwhelming the screen with elaborate visual effects, the game prioritizes readable platforms, hazards, characters, and puzzle elements. This clarity is important because successful play depends on quickly understanding the environment. Its visual style may appear modest beside more elaborate modern platformers, but that simplicity contributes to its nostalgic personality and keeps attention on the puzzles themselves. Steam features also complement the game's replay-oriented structure. Steam Achievements provide additional goals, Steam Cloud makes progress management more convenient across compatible computers, and Family Sharing adds flexibility for households using the platform. The interface is available in several languages, including English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Dutch, and Russian. The game is primarily driven by movement and visual puzzle logic, so its core appeal does not depend on extensive dialogue or narrative exposition. Steam Deck compatibility requires some qualification. The Steam store currently does not display an official Valve Steam Deck Verified or Playable rating for the game. Therefore, it should be considered officially unrated for Steam Deck rather than confirmed Verified. Its lightweight 2D puzzle-platforming design and controller-friendly style suggest that it may be a reasonable candidate for handheld play, but that should not be confused with an official compatibility certification. Players specifically purchasing it for Steam Deck should keep this distinction in mind. The main weakness is also a consequence of its focused design. Players looking for deep storytelling, character development, combat, large-scale exploration, extensive customization, or complicated progression will find little of that here. The game is built around solving puzzles, coordinating two characters, collecting diamonds, and improving completion times. Its deliberately traditional construction may feel too familiar for anyone expecting a dramatic reinvention of the formula, but players seeking precisely this style of uncomplicated puzzle-platforming are likely to see that familiarity as a strength. Ultimately, Fireboy & Watergirl 4: The Crystal Temple succeeds as a compact and approachable continuation of a proven puzzle formula. It works well as a solo test of coordination but becomes especially enjoyable when two players share responsibility for the elemental duo. The combination of environmental puzzles, time-based objectives, collectible diamonds, cooperative interaction, and straightforward controls gives it enough substance to remain engaging without making the experience unnecessarily complicated. It is a nostalgic, accessible puzzle-platformer that understands the strengths of its established formula and concentrates on delivering them efficiently. Rating: 7/10
