Is the Vat Utopia or Dystopia? is a compact visual novel that mixes romance, science fiction, dark comedy, and philosophical reflection into an experience that is much stranger than the average love story. Developed and published by Night Cruising 夜间巡航, it uses the destruction of Earth and the observation of humanity as the backdrop for a surprisingly personal narrative. Despite the enormous scale suggested by its premise, the story is primarily interested in individuals, relationships, memories, and the question of what makes ordinary human existence meaningful. Much of the appeal comes from the contrast between absurd circumstances and sincere character interactions. Vanessa Chen, Ivy Xu, and Gipo Cardon bring different perspectives to the story, allowing seemingly ridiculous situations to gradually open the door to more thoughtful discussions. Vanessa's side of the narrative highlights how mundane experiences can become meaningful when they are shared with another person, while Ivy introduces more existential questions about repetition, reality, and whether simply continuing to exist is enough to feel genuinely alive. Gipo's connection to the Slicing Project expands the scope further by raising questions about preserving humanity and deciding what deserves to represent civilization. Although these concepts could easily produce a bleak dystopian story, the game deliberately avoids remaining miserable for long. Humor frequently interrupts the heavier material, while romance gives the narrative a warmer emotional foundation. This creates an unusual atmosphere where the end of the world can coexist with jokes, affection, philosophical conversations, and moments of genuine tenderness. The story is ultimately much more optimistic about human connection than its apocalyptic premise might initially suggest. The structure is extremely straightforward. There is only one main route and one ending, so this is not the type of visual novel built around constant decisions and radically different outcomes. Players looking for complicated branching paths, multiple romantic partners, or repeated playthroughs that uncover entirely new storylines may find it restrictive. On the other hand, the linear approach allows the narrative to remain focused. Its roughly four-hour length is also appropriate for the concept, providing enough time to develop the characters and themes without stretching an intentionally eccentric premise beyond its natural limits. Visually, the colorful anime-inspired character presentation provides another effective contrast with the darker implications of the setting. Around ten primary CG illustrations accompany important moments, giving significant scenes additional personality without turning the experience into an enormous production. The presentation is relatively modest, but it suits the scale of the project. Steam achievements, trading cards, Steam Cloud support, Family Sharing, and Points Shop items provide some additional features for players who enjoy collecting platform extras. One important consideration is language accessibility. The game supports Simplified Chinese for its interface and subtitles but does not officially provide English support. That is particularly significant for a visual novel because understanding the writing is essential to experiencing practically everything the game offers. Its humor, philosophical ideas, romantic development, and characterization depend heavily on dialogue. Players who cannot comfortably read the supported language will therefore have difficulty appreciating the experience as intended. The technical requirements are lightweight, which is unsurprising for this type of game. Steam Deck compatibility, however, does not currently have an official Valve Verified, Playable, or Unsupported rating listed. It should therefore be regarded as Unknown or Unverified for Steam Deck rather than assumed to have full compatibility. Its modest hardware requirements suggest performance itself is unlikely to be the primary concern, but an official compatibility badge would provide greater confidence regarding controls, text readability, and other handheld-specific considerations. What ultimately makes the game memorable is its willingness to combine ideas that normally seem incompatible. It can discuss the fate of humanity while focusing on small emotional experiences, treat an apocalyptic scenario with absurd humor, and surround a relatively sincere romance with deliberately bizarre science-fiction concepts. The result is not a mechanically ambitious visual novel, nor is it designed for extensive replayability. Instead, it concentrates on delivering one short, distinctive story with a clear identity. For players comfortable with Simplified Chinese who appreciate unconventional visual novels, this offers an appealing mixture of romance, comedy, existential questioning, and science-fiction weirdness. The lack of branching choices and English localization limits its broader accessibility, but the focused runtime and unusual thematic combination prevent it from feeling like another interchangeable romance visual novel. It understands that even when discussing humanity on an enormous scale, the smallest personal experiences can be the ones worth preserving. Rating: 8/10

Love the art, game looks good! However i do not speak Korean. Please add English. Arigatou!
