Cozy game about maps! really enjoyed my playthrough and i can safely reccomend the title to anyone even slightly interested in the core concept.
Map Map is a quaint little game that advertises itself to be about cartography but is more about trigonometry, if nothing else. Figuring out where landmarks are in relation to a landmass is fun and rewarding, especially when you manage to get close on your first attempt. The game does a good job of making you feel clever for using the tools at your disposal. However, you can also just guesstimate your way through most of the game, and there’s no real disadvantage to doing so. The game doesn’t discourage this approach, and in the endgame, it’s actually the faster method. Some additional boundaries or restrictions would have been nice. That said, the game’s cute visuals and relaxing atmosphere make it an easy one to sink some time into. It has that cozy quality where you can pick it up for a few minutes, solve a couple of maps, and put it down again or just as easily find yourself getting lost in it for much longer than intended. There’s very little pressure, and the overall presentation makes the experience feel pleasantly calming. I was however a little disappointed by the fact that the game is less about making your own map and more about placing things on an existing one. Having to fully draw your own map from scratch, with your accuracy graded based on how closely your coastline matches the original, would have been a really cool addition. I feel like that would have made the sense of accomplishment much stronger and given players more incentive to actually use all the tools at their disposal. Still, Map Map provides a great foundation to build upon and is definitely worth a look.
Great concept and execution, but also a lot of weird choices. Positives: - You slowly get introduced to your tools and what your mapping tasks are all about. The levels, terrain and objectives become more difficult over time. There's less hand holding and more uncertainty (like even finding out where you are on the island when you first arrive) but your tools also become more useful. It's a nice mix. - The vibe is neat. Feels adventurous and calm at the same time. - The hidden chest puzzles can be straightforward or quite difficult. Also a nice mix. Negatives: - Later on, the islands focus a lot on verticality and platforming. The controls (especially for the glider) aren't great and the collision is often buggy. Navigation should not be that annoying when you have to get around the map to do your task. They also added extra platforming challenges and they aren't that fun as well. - The characters and dialog did not add anything to the game. The game did not give me enough motivation to keep reading the dialog that explains why I have to pin down some random flower on the map. The challenge to find the exact spot was good, but why does it have to be this flower? I don't know and I don't care. But it could have been something more interesting.
It's great. The mechanics advance in difficulty as you reach the end of the game I'm impressed
The game started quite nice but when I reached the swamp in the second half I got so annoyed. You get a divider from the beginning but no ruler. That's fine for the first few maps but it makes things unnecessarily complicated later on. Same for a magnetic compass. I see that a compass would've made the game much easier but I would appreciate more difficult tasks with the right set of tools rather than making simple tasks artificially difficult by removing the basic tools. When I got the glider, the main character constantly became stuck. I had to reload the map which erased my progress that I made so far. The respawn button in the menu did nothing in those cases. Sometimes my drawings survived the reload but after that I couldn't even erase them manually any more. The game's controls are clearly not made for platforming which makes the optional floor is lava challenges especially later on pretty frustrating. On map 18, there are even objects without collision geometry. When you try to land on them you will fall right through on the ground which will fail the challenge.
