This is an extraordinary game (especially at the Steam Sale price). It's heavily inspired by both the Hades series and with the previous Moonlighter, feeling like a bit of a mashup of the two. Some of the best parts of Hades are ported into the Moonlighter world, like randomized powerups, the satisfying "ding!" when all the monsters are dead on a level, and the frantic dodge and strike pattern used in Hades. From Moonlighter we inherit the characters, a less-frustrating version of selling your stuff at the shop, and the backpack choices where you have to decide whether to keep or throw away a relic. It gets the great Moonlighter mechanic where you can press your luck and face more dangerous battles to get yet better loot, or you can portal out and sell all your goodies for max price. Like in Darkest Dungeon, death is around every corner, and greed can be your undoing. In addition to these influences, there are new relic interactions where a particular treasure might "burn" another away, armor it against burning, or gain value whenever you burn a treasure. There are a variety of other cool interactions which vary with the particular dungeon-world you choose to enter. On particular days particular dungeons are worth more money at the shop, and there's a particular weapon that grants bonus value if you pick it to encourage you to vary your arsenal up. Here and there little side quests and tons of cool things you can buy to buff your shopkeeper-samurai, Will. Overall, it's a slick and fun experience and I am looking forward to diving back in to fight more flying flame-shooting bugs and spinning things with colorful globes.
Took me right about 100 hours to get to 100% accomplishment on this game. I'm very confused about early reviews since this is a fantastic game, even more so for being on sale! Boy, there was a ton of fun playing this game, once I found my desired weapon-type and gun type. That's a little negative, that most weapons require button spamming. My fingers couldn't last 100 hours of button spamming. So glad there are other options, although all weapons are melee weapons. We may have players that prefer other options, but that's what the guns are for. The title is a little misleading, letting players think the game is "endless", while it isn't really. I did make it down to Level 100 recently just to see if 99 was a cap (it wasn't). At that point, actually around level 50, I found it funny that the items upgrade faster than the offered items level up, causing you to just ignore everything. Oh, and progression is not smooth at all... I talk about playing up to level 100 but I have had all my gear maxed out at 9999 just from level 2!! Man, this game needs MORE! VERY fun game... maybe a little TOO fun if you had a job or kids. Additional Note: I look into the System Statistics and my Relics Discovered are showing only 158/165. I have double/triple/quadruple checked every contact and dungeon in the game, including Materials, Quest, and Codex, and Nothing is missing. What are the missing Relics?
I held off on a review until full release to see what they cooked since EA left me underwhelmed. Well, it's just worse in basically every way than the first one. Nothing is improved except the graphics, which actually makes the performance worse, adds no charm, and has a tendency to hiccup when a battle is actually tough costing you a run that feels really bad to lose because something you couldn't react to hit you. It's been weeks and I still can't complete a quest because the NPC doesn't spawn; I think it's fixed in the latest patch, and someday I'll come back and finish this probably but I kinda just don't care about this game. Which sucks. I want to.
I fell in love with the first game. The second one is even better. This was one of the games that made me like gaming again and I love the feel of the different weapons. I just wish that there were options to extend the dungeon run and add more rooms in-between (not the colosseum) and hopefully in the future they add more content, just as they added more content when they had the first game. I love the colosseum and endless dungeon part. I hope they do more. I can't wait for part 3 to comeout and finally see where Wills mom and dad went to. hopefully you open up so much money that you get to see you mom and dad again.
Very different to the first game, but different isn't bad! I genuinely had a good time with this as a roguelike dungeon crawler, and 6 regions keeps things interesting. The "two boon types per run" is a nice way to keep things focused, though I wish more synergies showed up. Some builds are a little less nice to play than others (genie builds only work if you can produce genies yourself, otherwise they fall apart at the bosses). Additionally, I encountered quite a bit of effect description ambiguity. Something easily patchable however! The shop portion of the game is a nice upgrade from the previous game, though it does feel like a lot of the mechanics that make it interactive and interesting are towards the later stages of the game. The price guessing is fun! Once I hit first credits, I felt "done" (even though there was plenty of post-game to do). Definitely some interesting modifiers and twists, but I don't think there's enough variety to keep the post-game as interesting as the first half. At a certain point, you're just grinding runs in order to afford your next unlocks, even if you spec hard into increasing item value. Despite that, this was still a genuinely positive experience. Kudos to the devs for comitting to a (divisive) vision for the game and executing it well! Small Steam Deck warning: this game seems to drain suspend mode battery a little faster than some other games (or maybe my battery's just kaput, hard to tell!).
