A new reality materializes. You find yourself on a solitary island, floating on a sea of liquid void and starlight, ringed by impassable mountains. This world is a mysterious place, yet strangely familiar.
Welcome to Nightwater, where you must master a new reality. Transform raw resources from simple sticks and stones into an industrial factory. Progress your technology through the ages, from primitive tools to modern machines and beyond. Expand the island by manifesting new biomes into existence to harvest their unique resources. Master multiple minigames to unlock powerful buildings and receive strong buffs.
All your efforts serve a single purpose: to reach the Lighthouse and uncover its secrets.

Nightwater is a game about gathering, collecting, and managing resources. There are multiple unique biomes, each with its own resources and secrets to unveil. Every resource features its own progression: gather by hand or automate with machines to hit each resource’s milestone goals and unlock new buildings, crafts, and powerful buffs. Explore every biome to discover 20+ resources and gain access to 100+ buildings, crafts, and buffs.

It’s fun to gather resources yourself, but it’s even more fun to build machines that do the work for you! Choose from 60+ buildings to construct farmers, assemblers, and storage units, link them with pipes, and automate every part of your production chain. You can build as many machines as you want and move or deconstruct them at any time without losing items. Automate all resources and their crafts, and unlock powerful late game buildings to make your factories faster, more efficient, and even bigger!

Use the time while your machines handle the work to progress in one of five unique minigames. Each minigame features its own gameplay loop, items, upgrades, and progression, unlocking new buildings, crafts, and buffs you can use outside the minigame to grow your factory and boost efficiency. The minigames are optional, but they offer fresh variety, their own sense of progression, and powerful rewards.

Nightwater tells a deep, personal story that is never handed to you. You’ll need to uncover hidden secrets, read between the lines, and piece together the clues to learn what Nightwater truly is. The story is fully optional, anyone can reach the end without engaging with it, but only players who search for the truth behind Nightwater and the Lighthouse will uncover all four endings and secret areas.
Nightwater is a game full of variety and unique content. As you play, you’ll uncover many secrets as well as experience a story that will make you question what Nightwater truly means to you.

fun for about the first half, but gets old after that. Most of the upgrades aren't even needed. I finished the game with only the first 3 rows of upgrades (20%). The ending is lame.
This is almost a recommend, but the gameplay loop is too shallow. This almost looks like a factory automation game, but don't get confused; Unlike most automation game, the gameplay discourages building actual factories. For example, the miners mine resources that you need to unlock progression. However, you don't get credit for mining those resources unless you take them out of the miner. It doesn't count if you pipe it into a factory. And don't get me started on the pipes. The way to connect your factory together is by using pipes. However, even the fastest pipes can't fully feed a slow factory. Most automation games encourage you to actually automate. The descriptions on the minors/factories/pipes also don't really help. They are descriptions like "slow" or "fast". But, the pipe you chose doesn't really make any difference because they are all so slow, that it encourages you to just set up a production pipeline and walk away for a long time. What speed of miners or factory or pipe should you use? Who cares! You're just going to walk away and check the progress later. No need for scaling or logistics. Then there is the minigames. Two of them are really fun. They are relaxing, and forgiving. Perfect mood for this game. But the mining one is boring and too luck based. The platform one is ok (I've read other reviews from people who hate it, but it seems fine to me). But the fuel one is a nightmare. This game is ok. Just ok.

Some of the best automation games find ways to mix the factory goals with other mechanics. Nightwater does this with semi-incremental minigames. This makes a pretty good impression in the demo, but it isn't enough to sustain a whole game. The diversions just don't have the depth or integration to stand as more than temporary distractions, and the poor controls and lackluster factory building mechanics keep this from ever settling in recommendable territory. As a factory game it's just bland. There are inscrutable decisions like not letting you easily feed from inventory into a storage and defaulting to a hard-to-reach key for all building selections (with no hotbar). You eventually get a jetpack upgrade for no apparent reason as it doesn't fit the lore and it isn't stable enough to help with actual building. Automation isn't needed for much of the game, and to finish you have to run a gauntlet of timed repeats of all the minigames with none of the upgrades you've worked to unlock. The ending and obscure bits of text along the way contribute nothing to the experience. If you play this, it's going to be because it's something to do, and it's decent enough as a distraction. But being different as factory games go doesn't make it worthwhile, and in the absence of a neutral option, I have to lean negative on this one.
