The year is 198X, and you're a jobbing composer. You start out with nothing but a toy keyboard shaped like a tiger, and a brand new sequence-o-matic 4-track that your uncle bought from a shady geezer in the pub.
Word quickly spreads about the new producer on the block, and soon the commissions are rolling in. Things start humble, recording tracks for weddings, workout videos and corporate presentations, but before long you're getting asked to score fantasy movies, museum openings, and all kinds of crazy stuff.
Of course, you'll have to upgrade your kit along the way. Turns out, the local second-hand magazine is a treasure trove of objects that make interesting sounds, from singing garden gnomes and shredders-that-shred-sound-as-well-as-paper, to high-end synthesisers and musical effects. By the end, you'll have figured out a sound that's all your own.

But OFFBEAT isn't just a game. All the musical instruments are fully simulated, and the music you're recording is real. The game is secretly a complete audio production tool. Every piece of music you create in the game gets exported and saved locally on your computer as a WAV file, which you can use for whatever you want.
Music production can be costly and complex to get into, especially for beginners. We created OFFBEAT to lower barrier to entry and to offer a playful, low-pressure way to learn the basics of audio producion. The goal is just to be expressive and experimental, but by the end you'll have learned a little about synthesizers, sound design, composition and recording. Our hope is that when the game's finished, you'll have the confidence and expertise to carry on composing and recording music.

I've always been really interested in trying to make music but literally any time I do it feels too overwhelming and complicated for me this game does a reallly good job at slowly introducing concepts and letting you learn at your own pace I think if you're remotely interested in getting offbeat, just play the demo. it gives soo much content to mess around with and gives you a feel of how the rest of the game will play
If you have any interest in music but don't know where to start, OffBeat is a great place to start. Or if you are already deep into music, OffBeat is a ton of fun to mess around with. I highly recommend this game!
game of the year
Fully fledged music-making software brilliantly disguised as a videogame. The dialogue is full of character, the instrument interactions and pixel art are (pixel) perfect, and the missions encourage you create literally anything from annoying ringtones to omni-layered masterpieces - or at least make you believe you've made a masterpiece. EDIT: The devs are a tiny team of seasoned artists who have clearly poured incredible passion & expertise into this game, and you should absolutely buy them a Nice Cup Of Tea.
