Game of the year. It's unfair, but you don't have to be fair either - imagine graduating from losing at a Blackjack table to breaking the dealer's arm for giving you the wrong cards. Take over a corp with resources from a major quest line, take their stock, all of it, and then sell, sell, sell and watch the economy dissolve before your very eyes. The game sends an entire squad of cryolaser machinegunners after you? Check their armor for weaknesses and come back just as strong to ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ liquify them in one turn next time. It took me about 60 hours to finish a major quest line on Hard with no baby QoL mods and I'm not sure whether to start a fresh save now or wait for an expansion to do it again, it's that addictive. However, it's not just about breaking the game through metaprogression, you always have opportunities to ♥♥♥♥ on your enemies - block their doors, blast through their walls straight to the objective or straight up wait for the titular quasimorphs to rip everybody apart if the mission allows for it. On top of all the fun you can have in gameplay, Quasimorph also has stellar writing - hilarious and terrifying at the same time. You may feel like you don't agree with the worst parts of a corp's philosophy and then find yourself regularly commiting something way worse in a casual session. It rewards you for being just as bad as the bad guys in the hellscape of apocalypse-stage capitalism, and I can't name another game that dares you to do the same.
A cool and fun game that is much less fun to play on Steam Deck because it desperately needs a better gamepad control scheme for everything besides moving and shooting. It has some other pain points that I've overlooked to give this thumbs-up, because it is a unique experience: - inventory management is just hell beyond the midgame - the information you need to decide the next contract/resource/upgrade to pursue is behind far too many clicks and icon hovers (my pmc corp practices vibes-driven decision making at this point) - sometimes a mission will get soft-locked because you are unable to call for extraction after completing all objectives and clearing every floor three times - people will helpfully recommend mods for some of this, but the mod has been broken since 3 patches ago
The longer you live, the more warped your tools become. Knowledge comes with a price.
Seems like an awesome game, the world and lore etc are brilliant, gameplay loop seems fun to grind. The UI controls and new-player experience is abysmal. After a brief intro you are thrown into the 'open' world with no real goal or guidance. You can, and likely will, make a decision that ruins your save file / run, which may take a few hours to realize. Then, you have to start over, only learning what you did wrong because you spend half an hour googling reddit posts filled with mixed information. Do this 4-5 times, and you can finally start playing the game. This isn't how any game should work. There is a difference between games like binding of isaac needing a wiki to finish quests, and a game like this where basic concepts and game structure are never explained to you. To understand how the game works and how it wants to be played, you will need to watch 1-2 hours of youtube guides. All of this could be solved with an extra tutorial, some tool tips, a 'help me' kind of guide character like Zomboid has, just anything. Instead, the game feels like lore, gameplay loop and story lines were finished, but nothing else. No UI improvements, no proper tutorial, no help system for players having issues. Again, having mods to fix these issues is nice, but fundamental basics should need to be modded into a game to make it playable. (This point is only relevant to UI issues, not the story or game structure)
