Split Fiction

9.5/10

Awesome game, played with my daughter and it was a blast.

Split Fiction is another work of art from Hazelight Studios, but it's far from perfect. The worldbuilding, art direction and execution, game design, and storyline are 10/10. It's rare for me to pause my gameplay to enjoy the setting that my character is in but this one had me pausing to appreciate nearly every session. The game design is simply splendid; changes in perspectives, puzzles, excellent mechanics and physics, and so many throwbacks or homages to other game types made for an exciting experience. Yet the game felt repetitive and the mini-games lacked replay value, unlike It Takes Two. I'm truly grateful for a proper split-screen experience in 2026 to play with my partner, but we both got fed up with level length in nearly half of our play sessions! It felt like they intentionally made every level like a third longer than it had to be just to add some hours to the game. Lastly, I found the game to be too simplified and easy, with no way to increase difficulty. Understandably, the game is not targeted at elite gamers but any proper game has some method for increasing difficulty. Even for my less experienced partner there came a point where we were just going through the motions rather than defeating a challenge. Overall: 6.5/10 for me. I'll update this with what my partner says. Beautiful work of art, incredibly thoughtful, so thankful for a game like this. Would recommend for that part alone.
