STEINS;GATE Octet of Shifting Space is an adaptation of the title originally released in 2011 for Windows XP/Vista/7. This is the first time it will be available on Steam. Inspired by the premise of "What if STEINS;GATE were recreated on a PC from the 1980s?", the title captures the look and feel of an 8-bit PC adventure game while becoming fully compatible with both software keyboards and USB keyboards for modern gaming platforms.

I'd heard of Steins Gate for years, everyone saying its a classic, yet not knowing anything about what the game really was. I assumed it was a JRPG or something. Until I learned that it was a Japanese visual novel, with a kooky sci-fi plotline. Now, I was interested! I had to decide if I'd get the classic version, or get the new more expensive reboot. In the end, I chose the new one, as I wanted the better graphics. So far, I am really enjoying the game! The story is pure off the wall Japanese anime style writing, with characters that are endearing and hilarious at times. if you enjoy Japan anime, and like visual novels, then there really isn't a better title to try out.

I debated whether to leave this review positive or negative, but as of 20/09/2026, I have to go with negative. STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT isn't a bad game, but I struggle to find a reason to recommend it over the versions that already exist. Unlike STEINS;GATE ELITE, RE:BOOT does not use anime scenes and stays much closer to the original visual novel. The problem is that if I want that experience, I'd rather just play the original STEINS;GATE. RE:BOOT adds updated visuals, animated character expressions, a modern UI, re-recorded voices, and an additional route. These are nice improvements, but for me they don't change the experience enough to justify the price. At over $100 for the complete package, I find it very difficult to recommend. If this were a $20-$30 release, I would see it as a nice alternative for existing fans. At its current price, it feels hard to justify. It is also worth mentioning that some editions include bonus content, such as STEINS;GATE Octet of Shifting Space, which is a separate STEINS;GATE title being offered as a bonus rather than additional RE:BOOT story content. While that's a nice extra, it doesn't change my opinion of RE:BOOT itself. I know this puts me in the minority compared to the overwhelmingly positive reviews, and I completely accept that - However, after playing both the original STEINS;GATE and STEINS;GATE ELITE, I felt it was worth sharing a different perspective. To keep it simple: STEINS;GATE = Best story experience. STEINS;GATE ELITE = Best anime-style presentation. STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT = Updated visuals and one extra route - IMO less content than the original. While RE:BOOT has its strengths, I don't think those additions are enough to justify its current asking price. My recommendation remains the same: buy the original for the story, buy ELITE for the anime-like presentation, and wait for a significant discount before considering RE:BOOT.

Enjoyed the remake of the story. Not to say the OG visual novel wasn't great as it is. But Re:Boot has a really polished experience. The story flows better and I appreciate the new Moeka route and other new content.
