Stonemachia is a parry-focused game much like Sekiro and Lies of P. It starts off very strong with good readability on attacks (well telegraphed) and an appropriate amount of health on both bosses and regular enemies. However, the further you progress in the game the more it becomes a guessing and counting game on what the boss does next. You have large amounts of screen pollution which makes it very difficult to see what the boss actually does, near instant and also very delayed attacks that force you to basically count when to parry, off-screen attacks, huge amounts of damage and a large health pool. Animation and hitbox synchrony is also very unclean for many boss attacks and regular foes, meaning you often parry air instead of the attack and the attack very frequently happens before the animation's finished. In Soulslikes when you beat a difficult boss you feel a sense of pride and accomplishment. Beating a boss after learning every move is fun and rewarding. Here, you'll be glad you can finally proceed.

It's a pretty fun, well-paced 7/10 game for me. Honestly don't think it should be rated overwhelmingly positive and here's why. The heart and soul is definitely there. You can see the strong influence from Souls games and even Expedition 33 while still trying to be its own thing. The lore and story elements are subtle and if you piece them altogether, it's actually fantastic. The gameplay is mostly great. There's no customisability to how you level up or set up your character with the exception of a skill tree about 1/4 through the game that has 12 skills, most of which you won't use. What's more is the skills aren't straight forward, they're combos that you have to time between class changes. Feels cool when you pull them off, feels far more annoying when you get interupted by enemies in the small window you have to pull them off. Most boss fights are great but many can start to feel the same as each other. Only few stand out as being more unique or challenging in their own special way (there's an incredibly creative secret optional boss closer to the end game that changes up things in a super fun way though). However the more challenging bosses are hard because they move and attack at a pace that seems like they're from a different game that makes using your special skills a bad thing as trying to pull them off puts you at more risk and wastes time you could just do plain attacks, making the fights feel restrictive and boring. NG+ is exponentially unbalanced from the beginning feeling like a NG+ mode where they didn't raise the difficulty at all, just allowing you to play with carrying over some of what you had in NG, to Souls games NG+7 in the later half. Adding this onto the lack of customisability makes this game have very limited replability in a way souls likes usually have unless you are fine with replaying the game out in mostly the same way every time. There is a summon system that's handled in quite a unique way which provides an interesting approach to boss fights but overall makes them more boring. There's a fair bit of enemy variety and many will look and feel like Nevrons from E33 or even angel like enemies from DMC or Bayonetta. The world design is also decent, and that's where you will get the more E33 look than Souls likes, except maybe Bloodbone which it is quite reminiscent of. However the actual map/world design with walls, boundry and asset placements can often look off. You can easily find yourself exploring outwards into nowhere, trying to see how far you can go before hitting a invisible wall, or quickly come across a boundry in places you think you should be exploring further. This makes navigating the maps awkward in a game that does promote exploration for collectibles and secret areas and fights. Additionally it very much shows it is an Unreal 5 game by the way it looks. Once again this is where some of the similarities of E33 come in and the general very familiar look UE5 games mostly have. Not necessarily a bad thing, just an easily observable thing. What guaranteed this game getting a thumbs up from me (even though it would get one without the following reason at its price) is the dev being active in the Steam discussion and releasing updates in responses to what's mentioned there. A dev personally addressed something I reported this way with a missing achievement (even if other people could have been impacted and mentioned it) but replied back in the discussion. That's dedication I can get behind and want to see more of that commitment in future projects. Overall a decent indie souls like that has the bones for the developer(s) to hopefully create something even greater in the future.
