This review comes from a heartbroken user. *World War Z VR* is a really fun and extremely interesting game. Just don't try to compare it to something well-crafted like *Half-Life: Alyx* or anything of that caliber, okay? It’s a cool way to pass the time, offering a dash of challenge that’s actually quite enjoyable. But the good times come to an abrupt end thanks to the developer itself. Saber Interactive released the game on August 12, 2025, and put out ONE measly update a few days later... and never touched the title again after that. The game remains abandoned, plagued by critical coding issues known not just to the community but to the developer as well—though their online troubleshooting page is about as useful as Michael Scott’s suggestion box in *The Office*. It serves absolutely no purpose. There are certain map-to-player interaction triggers that can tank the frame rate to under 10 FPS. And it doesn't just affect the game; the system even causes the SteamVR interface to freeze up. This happens whether I'm playing via Virtual Desktop, Steam Link, or even Meta Quest 3’s Air Link. I actually endured the freezes by using Pinterest inside the Quest 3 just to have something to do while waiting for the game to start running again... and using that workaround, I managed to beat every level on Normal mode. Now, however, as I try to challenge myself a bit and beat every map on Hard mode... I just don't have the patience I did when I started. And this isn't a case of "my PC is too weak to run the game, blah blah blah," because I’ve successfully played titles like *After the Fall*, *Arizona Sunshine I & II*, *Demeo*, *Demeo: Battle-marked*, *Extradimensional*, *The Forest*, *Geronimo*, *Half-Life: Alyx*, *Payday: Aces High* (as a tester), *Realm Craft*, *Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality*, *Superhot VR*, *Survive*, *VTOL VR*, *The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners*, *The Walking Dead: Retribution*, *Zero Caliber I & II*, and *Zombieland: Headshot Fever*—always with graphics settings above "High" and without a single issue. *World War Z VR*, on the other hand, is simply a game that tries but fails miserably due to the developer's incompetence. The bottom line: If this game pops up in a Steam Sale for under five bucks... go ahead and grab it to try and have some fun—it might be cool. But anything more than that... please... don't buy it. Spare yourself the frustration of having an interesting, fun game in your library that ends up unplayable and completely abandoned by the developer. Shame on you, Saber Interactive. You had a good thing in your hands but you're too much thinking on release a ♥♥♥♥ ton of games than having great finished games...
I have to say overall this game is a $10 game and no more than that, due to my cons outweighing the positives. Positives: - Zombies Hordes are impressive for VR and are massive. - The environments have decent variety. even though they're re-hashed maps from the base game. - Solid Voice Acting. - Campaign does not overstay its welcome about 6 hours in total. Cons: - There's a potentially game-breaking bug where picking up special equipment can completely mess up your weapon interactions and world interactions. You have to restart at the checkpoint or restart the entire mission. - Checkpoints are spaced too far out. - The game's key mechanic is poorly explained, took me a while to figure out you have to search the map because you will not find enough keys to survive the holdout moments. - PCVR Version looks like a slightly stepped up mobile game. - AI teammates are serviceable but nothing special, cant give them commands. - Big one, no online co-op. - Manual reload is trash, use automatic trust me bro. Also for grenades. - Some LVLS are dark as hell hard to see. - Reused maps from the base game, and reused characters nothing new besides slightly new areas from the base game. Verdict: An ok VR game, would not get it unless its on sale like i said up top, biggest standout is the horde.
Honestly, it's a good game. It's disappointing that it could have been a better game. There is no coop (taking most of the potential out for replayability), the campaign is short and there is no DLC to expand it. I think this is a game that at least could have used a few DLC's, because it does do a good job of doing a singleplayer L4D-style experience. It is as most say a VR cash-grab port of an existing game (with less features than the original and probably beyond the devs supporting it), but a well-done one. It's probably worth $15-20.
